The Bird Center has received many gifts in honor of individuals. We value and appreciate these contributions to our cause. The following is a list of just a few of the individuals in whose memory donations have been made.

In Memoriam

Doris J. Dixon

Doris headed the Michigan office of The Fund for Animals for over 30 years while also working at Washtenaw Community College. She was a good friend of Cleveland Amory and Doris Day. Her advocacy for animals was recognized locally and nationwide. She always made time to advise on animal related issues including the defeat of Proposition 3 in 2006 which would have made dove hunting in Michigan legal. In 1998 she published “Memoirs of a Compassionate Terrorist” with Carolyn Smith. On the first page of the book Cleveland Amory wrote “Doris Dixon was the first field officer of the Fund for Animals at its very beginning, and she remains first in the hearts of many of us. It’s hard to even begin to say how much we value her.” Her passion for helping animals, her wisdom, and humor will be missed.

The Bird Center has received gifts in Doris's memory from the following donors:

  • Barton Todd Dixon
  • Stephanie & Ray Hunter
  • Carol & Carl Akerlof

Paul Sample and Ann Dzwonkowski

Carol & Douglas Feldman made donations in memory of Paul Sample and Ann Dzwonkowski.

Francine Jones, Wildlife Rehabilitator

The hawks and owls of Michigan lost a dedicated rehabilitator on May 24th, 2011. The Bird Center lost a good friend. Francine was always willing to help a bird and was very encouraging and helpful to our student interns. We extend our sympathy to Francine’s parents and many friends.

Mildred Staley

Stephanie Staley Rutledge made a donation in honor of her mother, Mildred Staley, who passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2011. Throughout Mildred's life she found much joy in caring for birds, including a rescued pet finch. Her compassion for small creatures was an example to her friends and family. She will always be remembered for her loving and giving heart.

The Bird Center has also received gifts in Mildred's memory from the following donors:

  • Rebecca R. Emerson

You might remember her working shifts at the Bird Center, or cleaning Mary Street in preparation for the season, hauling tables to our storage area during an election, bringing the diets in after preparing them in her home, or perhaps you saw her washing dogs at the Ann Arbor Animal Hospital's charity garage sale and dog wash.
